India overtook Germany to become the fourth largest automobile market globally, as per data released on February 15, 2025. Total vehicle sales in India reached 4.6 million units in 2024, slightly ahead of Germany’s 4.3 million. This growth was driven by increased demand for passenger vehicles, strong SUV sales, and recovery in two-wheeler demand after the pandemic slump. Analysts said India is on track to surpass Japan in coming years if annual growth continues at over 8%. Carmakers like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Hyundai reported record production and retail sales. EV penetration also rose to 8% of new vehicle sales.
