Teacher Crisis in Jharkhand: Eligible candidates left out despite court orders

Residents Who Cleared CTET & TET Exams From Neighboring States Allowed To Apply For Teacher Appointment Process In Jharkhand: High Court

English Expanded Article:
Jharkhand is currently facing an acute shortage of teachers across its government schools, despite the Right to Education (RTE) mandate requiring each school to have at least two teachers and maintain a pupil-teacher ratio not exceeding 30:1. Official data shows that more than 8,000 schools in the state are being run by a single teacher, affecting the quality of education and burdening existing staff.

In a bid to address this crisis, the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) had initiated a recruitment process to appoint 6,000 upper primary teachers, following a directive from the Jharkhand High Court. The court had also set a clear timeline for document verification to be completed promptly. However, in a move that has triggered fresh conflict, JSSC has invited only around 2,700 candidates for document verification so far.

Reports suggest that over 500 aspirants, most of whom belong to the Science category, have been disqualified without any clear reason, despite meeting the eligibility criteria. Many of them had their document verification scheduled in the first week of June as per court orders, but were shocked to find their names missing from the list. Candidates are now demanding transparency and justice in the recruitment process, alleging arbitrary exclusion and negligence that directly affects their careers and the state’s education system.
